Minister Creecy to oversee improvements in Passenger Rail Services and launch city to city bus fleet
The Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA) has undertaken extensive efforts to revitalise and rebuild the country’s passenger rail service. These initiatives have focused on restoring railway infrastructure, improving safety, upgrading signaling systems and enhancing the reliability of commuter services.
Under the 2026 October Transport Month theme “Building a safe, sustainable, reliable and affordable transport system”, the Minister of Transport Hon. Barbara Creecy is pleased to demonstrate improvements in PRASA’s rail services, as well as launch the new City to City fleet which forms a part of the entity’s Long-Distance Passenger Services.
In the recent past, PRASA has had significant work being undertaken along the Mabopane rail corridor, which includes signaling upgrades, infrastructure improvements and initiatives aimed at increasing train frequency and improving operational safety. The operation of PRASA’s blue and white trains, known as Isitimela Sabantu on a majority of South Africa’s rail network, forms part of the ongoing efforts to improve the commuter rail experience and provide a more reliable and affordable public transport service.
“This October Transport Month presents us with the opportunity to demonstrate the vastness of the portfolios of entities within the Department of Transport and their impacts in the lives of all South Africans,” said Minister Creecy. “Not only have we witnessed the rebuilding of rail within PRASA, but we have also seen significant progress within their Long-Distance Passenger Services as well as secondary mandate,” added the Minister. Members of the media are invited to join as Minister Creecy conducts an oversight visit to PRASA’s Centralised Train Control Centre (CTC), the Mabopane Corridor as well as the launch of the new City to City Bus Fleet as follows:
