Minister Solly Malatsi welcomes appointment of new film and publications board council members
Minister of Communications and Digital Technologies, Solly Malatsi, today announces the appointment of Council members of the Film and Publications Board (FPB) for a five-year term.
The board members, whose appointments have been approved by Cabinet, are:
- Ms. Lungelo Dhladhla Nxele
- Ms. Mariann Maartens
- Ms. Ditaba Lucy Maraka
- Dr. Phosa Jan Mashangoane (Mr)
- Ms. Zandile Gail Mpungose
- Dr. Seithati Maria Motebang (Ms)
- Adv. Lindelwa Ndziba (Ms)
- Ms. Melanie Roy
- Prof Siyasanga Tyali (Mr)
Professor Siyasanga Tyali has been appointed chairperson, while Ms. Lungelo Dhladhla Nxele will serve as deputy chairperson.
“The new Council possesses the expertise required to enhance governance and strategic oversight at the FPB. The Council members represent the type of ethical and capable leadership needed to steer the Board through a period of unprecedented technological advancements and content development.
I am confident that their governance experience in both the public and private sector will ensure they maintain stability of strategic leadership within the FPB, exercise oversight over its executive leadership, and offer the necessary support to build a well-governed and sustainable state enterprise that executes its mandate effectively,” said Minister Malatsi on Tuesday.
The outgoing FPB Council recently reported a second consecutive clean audit. The entity also recorded a 100% achievement of its annual performance plan targets for the 2025/26 financial year.
The FPB performs a number of key functions, including the classification of films, games and publications, the protection of children from exposure to disturbing and harmful material, and the punishment of those found to have created and distributed sexually explicit content involving children.
“The FPB plays a key role in protecting the digital dignity of children, raising awareness about online safety and working with law enforcement agencies to fight cybercrimes. I urge the new Council and the executive leadership to strengthen their processes and capacity to tackle online harms.”
Minister Malatsi has called on the Council to steer the FBP towards proactive awareness programmes and effective interventions to protect South Africans from online harms, in particular children and vulnerable groups.
The Minister thanked the outgoing chairperson Ms. Zama Mkosi and the previous Council for their commendable work during their term and for continuing to oversee the entity for an extended period until the new Council was appointed.
