Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi commemorates 1956 Women's March and honour Lehurutshe heroines, 4 Sept
The Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development, Ms. Mmamoloko Kubayi, will honour women from Lehurutshe, in the North West, for their contribution to the anti-pass resistance movement and their place in the enduring legacy of the 1956 heroines. The women will be recognised at a special event on Friday, 04 September 2026.
The event takes on added significance as South Africa marks the 70th anniversary of the historic 1956 Women's March and the 30th anniversary of the adoption of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa.
While the 1956 Women's March is commemorated nationally, the contribution of women in rural communities to the struggle against apartheid remains an important part of South Africa's history. Lehurutshe was the site of one of the most notable rural uprisings against the pass laws, where women stood firmly against the oppressive system.
Minister Kubayi will deliver the keynote address, paying tribute to the women of Lehurutshe and reflecting on the importance of preserving their contribution to South Africa's history for future generations.
