Hottest politics and government news from South Africa
Provided by AGPDeputy Minister of Forestry, Fisheries, and the Environment Bernice Swarts unveiled the Presidential One Billion Trees Program at a formal launch ceremony in Pretoria on Monday, signaling the government's firm commitment to ecological restoration. She announced that a landmark mass-planting event is scheduled for September 24 — the nation's Heritage Day — building on the momentum of a 2025 campaign that saw more than 1.3 million trees planted across the country on that same date.
Rallying under the theme "My Tree, My Oxygen. Plant Yours Today," the initiative will extend its reach into schools, health clinics, community parks, and residential neighborhoods — embedding green infrastructure at the heart of everyday South African life.
Swarts painted a stark picture of the environmental pressures threatening communities across the nation, warning that deteriorating weather patterns are already disrupting livelihoods. She stressed that "greening our country is therefore not only an environmental responsibility, but also a social and economic necessity. Trees do offer economic benefits from the angle of integrating them into sustainable settlements."
Urging every South African to take ownership of the campaign, Swarts framed tree planting not as a government initiative alone, but as a collective civic duty — one that carries consequences for generations yet to come.
The program draws its inspiration from the late Wangari Maathai, the Kenyan environmentalist and Nobel Peace Prize laureate whose groundbreaking work mobilizing communities to plant millions of trees became a global symbol of resistance against deforestation and poverty.
