S. Africa to resume partaking as member of G20

(MENAFN) South African President Cyril Ramaphosa reaffirmed the country’s commitment to being a full and active participant in the G20, dismissing threats from US President Donald Trump to exclude Pretoria from next year’s summit, according to reports.

The US had boycotted the G20 leaders’ summit in Johannesburg on November 22-23 amid tensions over Trump’s claims that South Africa allows “horrific” abuses against its white minority. Trump later said South Africa would not be invited to the 2026 summit in Florida, criticizing the country as unfit for membership after it reportedly refused to hand over the G20 presidency to a US Embassy representative at the closing ceremony.

In a state-of-the-nation address on Sunday, Ramaphosa said that South Africa has formally transferred the rotating G20 leadership to Washington “observing the appropriate diplomatic protocols.” He emphasized that the country, as a founding member, will continue to engage in the G20 “in its own name and right,” despite ongoing tensions with the US.

Ramaphosa denounced Trump’s long-standing accusations of “genocide against Afrikaners” and land seizures from white citizens as “blatant misinformation.” He noted that the US stance has been influenced by a prolonged disinformation campaign involving actors both inside and outside South Africa.

Despite the diplomatic rift, Ramaphosa reiterated South Africa’s commitment to maintaining friendly relations with the American people, pointing to “large numbers” of US businesses and civil society groups that participated in Johannesburg’s G20 events.

“We value the US and its people as a partner. We affirm our commitment to continue to engage in dialogue with the US, and to do so with respect and with dignity as equal sovereign countries,” he said.
